St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner on March 17th. They’ll be green beer, fountains dyed green, and shamrocks galore. It’s an upbeat, fun, and festive holiday in honor of Ireland’s patron saint. If your business is named after your great-grandfather from the old country, such as Murphy, Kelly, or O’Sullivan, then you need to share St. Patty’s day advertising specialty products with your customers. However, you don’t have to be Irish to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day or giveaway branded merchandise.

It’s a Shamrock

A shamrock is a low growing, three-lobed leaf, ground cover found in Ireland. And on St. Patty’s day you can share hundreds of Shamrock products. I have a bright green T-shirt with a shamrock that claims to be my lucky Irish shirt. There are caps and top hats adorned with shamrocks. Necklaces with green blinking shamrocks are great fun. As well as shamrock decorated mugs perfect for green beer. How about green foam visors, and hydrogen filled shamrock shaped balloons. And if shamrocks aren’t your thing maybe Leprechauns would fit the bill?

Who Was Saint Patrick?

Did you know St. Patrick wasn’t named Patrick and he wasn’t Irish? Born around 373 BC, the son of a Roman Officer, his name was Maewyn Succat. It’s uncertain whether he was born in Scotland or Roman held Britain, but he wasn’t born in Ireland. At the age of six, he was kidnapped and sold into slavery. Eventually, he escaped to Britain, traveled on to France, and studied religion for 12 years in Germany.

His life’s mission was to convert the pagan Gaelic population of Ireland to Christianity. To that end, he crisscrossed Ireland for more than 20 years establishing, schools, churches, and monasteries. A few of his writings survive to today. However, the myth of St. Patty grew bigger than the man. For example, the story that he drove the snakes out of Ireland is a myth, not fact.
