A few years ago we did a complete rebrand for a fast growing mid-size company. We began the rebrand with logo creation and continued with interior and exterior signage, vehicle graphics, print collateral, web design, and social media icons. The original logo looked like clip art from 1992. It was awful. The logo had little to do with the business or the culture.

The company decided to rebrand because they’d heard one too many jokes about their logo and wondered how many customers, prospects, vendors, employees, and employment candidates didn’t take their business serious because of something as simple as an amateurish logo.

How to Create a Professional Logo

How does a company create a professional logo? I can answer that in three words. Hire a professional. That’s the answer. Do not task your latest intern with the job. Do not pull an image off the internet and add your name to it. And do not let you cousins daughter’s niece design it (unless of course, she’s a pro). Here are a few of the things a professional will do.

A Logo Isn’t One Size Fits All

If your logo would work for any other company, then it doesn’t work for you. Your logo should fit your business and yours alone. The logo should answer what you do, who you are, and reflect your culture. A professional designer can help you understand and create a one of a kind logo.

Typography

Typography is more than choosing a font. It’s understanding hierarchy, white space, and how the human eye takes in information. It’s knowing how the CTA (call to action), USP (unique sales position) and tagline can complement the logo not distract from it.

Color

Many industries are associated with particular color combinations. Sometimes it’s best to stick with industry accepted colors and sometimes it’s better to think outside of the box and set yourself apart from your competition. How humans react to colors is critical as well. The Psychology Behind Color

Who’s Gonna See It?

At the beginning of this post, I mentioned all the pieces of a major rebrand we’d completed. A professional designer will help you create a logo that shows well on all mediums.

Why a Professional Logo Matters

Every logo makes an impression, good, bad, or indifferent. Two out of three of these aren’t good for any business. A professional logo can help with the following:

  • Build Brand Awareness
  • Create Customer Loyalty
  • Introduce New Customers for Your Business
  • Make a Positive First Impression
  • Show Pride in Employees
